Her Excellency addresses the commemorative service at the Hobart Cenotaph to mark the 25 anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan

Yesterday, communities came together at services across the country to mark the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan.

In Hobart, Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, Governor of Tasmania, laid a wreath and gave an address at a commemorative service hosted by RSL Tasmania at the Cenotaph.

Speaking to those gathered, Her Excellency honoured the more than 35,000 Australians who served in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021.

"To the veterans here today, this nation sees you and it is grateful," Her Excellency said.

"To the families of the 47 who did not return, their names are carved in stone at the Australian War Memorial, but they live, more truly, in the way that family, colleagues and friends still hold them dear.

"To every Australian who wore this nation's uniform in Afghanistan, in whatever capacity, for however long, and for those who continue to do so, thank you.

"Lest we forget."
