Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells

Tasmania’s 30th Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, was sworn to Office at Government House on Wednesday 17 June 2026.

An experienced and passionate Tasmanian community leader, prior to her appointment as Governor, Her Excellency held Chief Executive and senior executive roles at both State and national levels in the not-for-profit and public sectors.

Her Excellency commenced her professional career as a registered nurse, graduating in 1985 from the University of Tasmania. During her career, she held senior leadership positions in the health sector including Director of Nursing roles.

In 2005, Her Excellency was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Diabetes Tasmania and, during her tenure, also undertook national advisory roles with Diabetes Australia.

Prior to her appointment, Her Excellency held a number of directorships at both local and national levels across the health and aged care sectors, including serving as the Chair of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania. These roles reflected Her Excellency’s strong commitment to these vital sectors and her extensive experience in corporate governance practice.

Her Excellency holds a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University, is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and holds professional coaching qualifications with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership.

Born in Hobart and educated at The Friends' School, Her Excellency is a very proud Tasmanian who is passionate about connecting with communities around the State.

Her Excellency’s partner, Dr Rob Walters RFD, is a recently retired, long-standing Hobart General Practitioner and well known in the local community.

Her Excellency enjoys travel, a good crime drama, sport, keeping up with current affairs, and spending time with family and friends. A passionate foodie, Her Excellency particularly enjoys cooking and creating occasions that bring people together around the table. She is also a regular gym-goer who relishes any opportunity to get out for a walk.

Her Excellency has two stepdaughters and four grandchildren aged between four and 13 years, along with a much-loved 17-year-old ginger cat, Gus.
