The Governor is His Majesty King Charles III’s representative in Tasmania and is appointed by His Majesty on the advice of the Premier of Tasmania.
On Wednesday 6 May the Premier, the Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, announced that His Majesty has accepted his advice to appoint Ms Caroline Wells as the next Governor of Tasmania.
An experienced Tasmanian community leader, Ms Wells commenced her professional career as a registered nurse and has held senior leadership positions in the health sector. She is currently Chair of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania and previously served as CEO of Diabetes Tasmania.
The term of the Governor is ‘at The King’s pleasure’, meaning there is no fixed term, but in practice the Premier reaches an agreement with an incoming Governor that they will serve for a specified period, usually five years.
Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC’s five-year term as Governor concludes on Monday 15 June. Ms Wells will be sworn in as Tasmania’s 30th Governor at a ceremony at Government House on Wednesday 17 June.
