Tasmania has lost an inspirational educator, advocate and leader with the passing of Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder Dr Aunty Patsy Cameron AO.
Aunty Patsy made it her life’s work to ensure Tasmanian Aboriginal people were proud of their culture, history and heritage, and she generously shared her cultural knowledge and stories with all who were guests on Country.
As a founding member of the Melaythenner Teeackana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation (MTWAC), she was a dedicated advocate for Country, language and community.
I am saddened that I did not have the opportunity to meet Aunty Patsy during my visit to MTWAC last month, but I could clearly see her dedication reflected in the organisation's ongoing mission.
As we mourn Aunty Patsy’s passing, we remember the warmth, wisdom and kindness she brought to all her work.
Her legacy will live on through Mannalargenna Day, the uplifting celebration of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture on her beloved Tebrakunna Country.
I look forward to attending this year's event in December, as I know that my predecessors very much enjoyed their visits to the beautiful North East for the festival.
