Disability Commissioner Tasmania

In the afternoon in Hobart, the Governor, accompanied by Professor Chalmers, delivered an address to officially open the inaugural office of the Disability Commissioner Tasmania.

Earlier this year the Governor welcomed Tasmania’s inaugural Disability Commissioner, Catherine Whitington, to Government House and today she was delighted to reunite with her as she officially opened the new office of Disability Commissioner Tasmania in Hobart.

The independent statutory authority was established on 1 July this year under the Disability Rights, Inclusion and Safeguarding Act 2024, to which the Governor gave Royal Assent in November last year.

Today she joined staff and stakeholders to launch the new office premises, which have been purposefully designed with accessibility in mind, including features such as adjustable height working spaces, wayfinding carpet, Braille signage and more.

The Governor was also pleased to hear more about the authority’s work to protect and promote the rights of people with disability across our State.
