In her ceremonial role, the Governor receives calls from Ambassadors, High Commissioners and other consular and diplomatic officials when they are visiting Hobart.

This afternoon she received His Excellency Mr Pham Hung Tam, Ambassador of Vietnam to Australia, and an accompanying delegation at Government House.

In the afternoon at Government House, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, presided over the swearing-in of the Premier, the Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, and his Cabinet.

A key part of the Governor’s role is officiating at important State ceremonies, including swearing in the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.

Homelessness Week 2025

Later, the Governor and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers received representatives of the Hobart City Mission, Salvation Army Tasmania, and Kingborough Helping Hands to receive food donations to mark Homelessness Week 2025.

In her community engagement role, the Governor is committed to supporting organisations providing services to Tasmanians in need.

In the afternoon, the Governor received Mr Andrew Hawkey, Electoral Commissioner, Tasmanian Electoral Commission.

As His Majesty The King’s representative in Tasmania, the Governor’s main duty is to exercise the constitutional powers of the Head of State.

She plays an important role in elections, by proroguing Parliament and dissolving the House of Assembly, and issuing the writs for an election.
