Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue

As Patron of the Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue (FOSMA), the Governor was saddened to hear the news that plaques honouring World War I servicemen had been stolen and damaged last month.

The Governor and Professor Chalmers, accompanied by Oskar and Nala, joined FOSMA President John Wadsley on the Queen’s Domain in Hobart to tour the Avenue and hear more about the pathway towards reinstalling the plaques.

The plaques are virtually worthless as scrap metal but each one is unique and stands as a solemn commemoration to a brave Tasmanian who served his country.

Mr Wadsley explained that although the stolen plaques had been recovered, there was still work to be done to restore them to their original condition.

The Governor was pleased to hear that FOSMA had received many words of support from the community as well as offers of financial assistance to help restore the plaques.
