Melaythenner Teeackana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation

Following on from her visit to the Melaythenner Teeackana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation (MTWAC) in Launceston last week, this morning the Governor was pleased to welcome the group to Government House for a very special presentation.

MTWAC Director and Indigenous Fellow in the School of Geography, Planning and Spatial Sciences at the University of Tasmania, Rob Anders, presented Government House with a cultural firestick.

Firesticks represent ongoing cultural practice and identity, with this significant piece of living history now added to Government House’s collection of Aboriginal artworks and objects.

The Governor said she was grateful for the gift, which would be cared for and displayed in the Government House foyer, next to a kelp basket made by Aunty Netty Shaw.
