Parliament of Tasmania

In the afternoon at Government House, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, presided over the swearing-in of the Premier, the Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, and his Cabinet.

A key part of the Governor’s role is officiating at important State ceremonies, including swearing in the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.

Yesterday's ceremony followed Her Excellency's decision last week to reappoint the Premier citing the convention of incumbency and that it is better for confidence to be determined inside and not outside the Parliament. Detailed reasons for Her Excellency's decision are available here.

Section 8B(4) of Tasmania’s Constitution Act 1934 provides that a Minister’s term of office expires seven days following the day after the return of the writs, hence the need to swear in the Premier and Ministers before this deadline.

Parliament will return next week, after Her Excellency issued a Proclamation to fix the date of the next session as Tuesday 19 August.
