In the morning at Triabunna, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, accompanied by Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers, delivered an address and laid a wreath at the 2025 Tasmanian Seafarers’ Memorial Service.
The Governor serves as Patron of the Tasmanian Seafarer’s Memorial Committee and yesterday was proud to attend the annual Memorial Service at Triabunna.
Her Excellency gave an address at the service, which was moved to the Triabunna Community Hall due to the windy weather, before laying a wreath at the Memorial to honour and remember seafarers who have lost their lives at sea.
The Tasmanian Seafarers’ Memorial is dedicated to all Tasmanian seafarers – civilian and members of the armed services during peacetime as well as times of conflict – who have died at sea.
It is also dedicated to all seafarers, regardless of occupation or nationality, who lost their lives in Tasmanian waters, and records the loss of 1,593 souls on 132 plaques.
In her address, the Governor said that the plaques ensure that the memory of the lost lives on and noted that, happily, no new plaques needed to be added to the Memorial this year.
