Vietnam Veterans’ Day

The Governor, in her ceremonial role, represents the people of Tasmania at important national commemorations, including Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

In the morning, she laid a wreath and addressed the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Commemorative Service at the Hobart Cenotaph.

More than 60,000 Australians served during the Vietnam War; 523 died and almost 2,400 were wounded.

In her address, the Governor highlighted one of the final chapters of Australia’s involvement in Vietnam, Operation Babylift in April 1975, which saw personnel work to evacuate hundreds of orphaned and displaced Vietnamese children.

“As we mark this 50th anniversary, we honour the bravery of those involved and remember the lives saved and lost during this remarkable mission,” the Governor said.
