In the afternoon at Penguin, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, accompanied by Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers, delivered an address at a twilight street party hosted by the Central Coast Council to mark the 150th anniversary of the township of Penguin and the 50th anniversary of the installation of the Big Penguin.
The Governor was delighted to be in Penguin on Tasmania’s North West Coast to attend a twilight street party celebrating the town’s 150th anniversary.
Penguin was proclaimed a town on 25 October 1875, and throughout 2025 locals have been taking part in an exciting programme of events to mark the sesquicentenary, including a ‘Great Penguin Waddle’ and an Easter ‘Egg-Stravaganza’.
Addressing the grand finale event on Saturday, the Governor congratulated Penguin on 150 years and said the celebrations reflected the town’s continued spirit of creativity and community.
She commended the Penguin 150 Committee and the many volunteers and organisations who worked tirelessly over the past two years to make the celebration possible; and thanked the Central Coast Council for hosting her on her visit.
