Cretan Association of Tasmania

In the afternoon at the Hobart Cenotaph, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers attended the wreath laying ceremony to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete hosted by the Cretan Association of Tasmania, followed by a reception at Hellenic House at which the Governor delivered an address.

A key part of the Governor’s ceremonial role has been representing the people of Tasmania at important commemorations throughout her term, including Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

Today, she attended a ceremony to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, which took place on the island during World War II and involved Greek and other Allied forces.

The Governor laid a wreath at a service at the Hobart Cenotaph and then gave an address at a reception hosted by the Cretan Association of Tasmania at Hellenic House.

Speaking to those in attendance, she highlighted Tasmanian soldiers involved in the Crete campaign, and the connections between Crete and Tasmania which continued to grow in the post-war period.

The Governor honoured the memory of all those who lost their lives and noted that the Greek-Australian bond forged during the battle still resonates today.
