Dover History Group

In the morning at the Dover Museum and Gallery, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, accompanied by Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers, delivered an address to officially open the Dover History Group’s exhibition, Wreck of the George III.

One of the Governor’s priorities is supporting Tasmanian arts and culture and she enjoys travelling around our State to visit museums and art galleries and view exhibitions focused on Tasmania’s cultural heritage.

Her Excellency was delighted to head south to the Dover Museum and Gallery to officially open the exhibition ‘Wreck of the George III’.

The exhibition chronicles the tragedy of convict ship the George III, which was wrecked on rocks at the entrance to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in 1835.

The Governor remembered the 133 lives lost in what was one of Tasmania’s most significant maritime disasters and commended the Dover History Group for highlighting their stories through the exhibition.

She acknowledged the researchers, local historians, volunteers and community members for their efforts in creating the exhibition and their dedication to preserving the past.
