In the morning at Tebrakunna, Little Musselroe Bay, Cape Portland, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, accompanied by Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers, delivered an address at the official opening of the Mannalargenna Day Festival 2025 hosted by the Melaythenner Teeackana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation.
Her Excellency was honoured to be on Tebrakunna Country in the State’s North-East for Mannalargenna Day 2025.
The festival honours the memory of Tasmanian Aboriginal leader Mannalargenna and celebrates his life, the lives of Ancestors and continuing Aboriginal culture.
This year’s event featured a ceremony to spiritually welcome home Timme, who was taken from his Country as a boy and died far from his home in 1842, through the unveiling of a sculptural representation of a bark canoe.
Having met the artists and project team involved in creating the sculpture earlier this year, the Governor was delighted to join with the Melaythenner Teeackana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation to welcome Timme home.
As Patron of the festival, she commended MTWAC on organising another vibrant program of activities this year and thanked all volunteers, sponsors and supporters for their efforts to ensure Mannalargenna Day’s success.
