In the morning at the Campbell Town Cenotaph, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers attended the commemorative service to mark the 2026 National Day for War Animals hosted by the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club.

National Day for War Animals in Australia, commemorating the deeds and sacrifices of animals in war, is observed annually on 24 February.

Today, the Governor was pleased to attend a service to mark the day at the Campbell Town War Memorial, hosted by the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club Tasmania.

The ceremony honoured the animals who have served beside Australian and allied forces in times of war and peace, from the horses of the Light Horse regiments to the pigeons, camels, donkeys and dogs who have served in conflicts across the world.

Attendees heard the story of explosives detection dog Sarbi and her remarkable survival in Afghanistan, and the event also highlighted the work of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation and its War Dog Rehoming Support Fund.
