In the afternoon at Government House, the Governor received Mr Andrew Hawkey, Electoral Commissioner, Tasmania Electoral Commission, in relation to writs for the elections for the Legislative Council divisions of Huon and Rosevears.
In her important constitutional role, the Governor facilitates the work of the Parliament and issues the writs – or commands – for Parliamentary elections held in Tasmania.
Today at Government House she received the Electoral Commissioner, Mr Andrew Hawkey, regarding the writs for upcoming Legislative Council elections.
There are 15 Legislative Council divisions in Tasmania, and elections are held following a six-year periodic cycle, with three members elected in May of odd-numbered years and two in May of even-numbered years.
Today, the Governor formally issued the writs instructing the Tasmanian Electoral Commission to hold elections for the divisions of Huon and Rosevears on Saturday 2 May.
Once the results are finalised and the declaration of the Poll has taken place, the Commissioner will return the writs to the Governor, who will sign them, bringing the election process to a close.
