University of Tasmania | Wicking Dementia Centre

In the evening, the Governor and Professor Chalmers hosted a reception for the University of Tasmania’s Wicking Dementia Centre to mark the launch of the updated massive open online course (MOOC) ‘Understanding Dementia’.

In her community engagement role, the Governor recognises and celebrates the efforts of Tasmanian scientists and researchers who are working to improve the lives of their fellow Tasmanians.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, advocating for greater awareness and understanding of dementia, which impacts more than 55 million people globally.

The MOOC incorporates the latest research and best practice in dementia care and education and has been informed by Tasmanians with lived experience of dementia.

The Governor congratulated the Wicking Centre on the updated MOOC and noted that since it was first launched in 2013 it has been completed by more than 750,000 people worldwide.
