Zonta Club of Hobart Inc

In the afternoon at Government House, the Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Barbara Baker, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers hosted an afternoon tea for members of the Zonta Club of Hobart Inc to mark the 2026 United Nations International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

Today marked the United Nations International Day for Women and Girls in Science, and the Governor was pleased to celebrate alongside some of Tasmania’s female scientists of the future.

The international day recognises that women remain under-represented in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) disciplines across the world, and encourages initiatives to help close the gender gap.

Members of the Zonta Club of Hobart Inc. joined the Governor for afternoon tea at Government House to mark the day and present awards to the next generation of STEMM superstars.

As an organisation working towards equality for all women, the Club provides scholarships to girls in year 12 who are committed to continuing their studies in STEMM fields at university.

The Governor was delighted to present certificates to the three winners – Jemima MacGregor, Dihansa Uderwatta and Somony Yen – and wish them well for their future studies.
